These rare apes belong to Southeast Asia and are critically endangered. The biggest threat to them is deforestation as plantations for developing palm oil are growing exponentially. Besides, since they breed only once every six to eight years, populating the species is challenging. So, many alternative conservation efforts are being put in to save the Sumatran orangutan. For example, the international Orangutan Day is observed on August 19 every year.
